Why the diagonal can be misleading

The manufacturer's specification in inches (e.g., "65-inch TV") always refers only to the screen diagonal. However, this doesn't tell you how wide the device actually is on your wall.

Especially when installing wall mounts, width and height are crucial to maintain the correct distance from furniture or windows.
Note: Our table below shows the pure display dimensions. Depending on the model, add approx. 1-2 cm for the housing frame!

Frequently Asked Questions about Inches & TV Sizes (FAQ)

How do I measure the inch size correctly? +
Diagonally from one corner to the opposite. The screen diagonal is always measured from one corner to the opposite corner (e.g., bottom left to top right). Important: Measure only the visible glass, not the housing frame! Divide the result in cm by 2.54 to get the value in inches.
Are the dimensions in the table exact? +
They are guidelines for the pure screen area. The dimensions in the table are the pure panel dimensions (screen area) in 16:9 format. Every TV also has a housing frame. On modern devices, this is very thin (0.5 - 1.5 cm per side), but on older devices, it is wider. To be safe, always add 2-3 cm to the width and height.
What is the ideal viewing distance? +
Rule of thumb: Screen diagonal times 1.5. Previously, the rule was: diagonal times 3. For modern 4K/UHD televisions, the rule of thumb applies: screen diagonal x 1.5. For a 65-inch TV (approx. 165 cm diagonal), the ideal distance would be about 2.50 meters. This allows for an immersive experience without seeing pixels.
Do I need stronger anchors (dowels) for larger inch sizes? +
That depends primarily on the weight. Indirectly yes, because larger TVs are usually heavier, even though modern OLEDs can be surprisingly light. More decisive than the inch size is the weight and the leverage (with swivel arms). Always check the total weight and use brand-name anchors (e.g., Fischer DuoPower).
What is the difference between 55 Inch and 55 Inch Class? +
It is a rounded size specification. Manufacturers often round up or down. A "55 Inch Class" TV might actually measure 54.6 inches. For rough planning, this difference is negligible, but for millimeter-precise installation in a wall unit, you should always check the exact model's datasheet.
Why do monitors and TVs have the same inch numbers but different formats? +
Because of the different aspect ratio. TVs almost always have a 16:9 aspect ratio. PC monitors often come in 21:9 (Ultrawide) or 16:10. A 34-inch Ultrawide monitor is significantly wider but less tall than a 32-inch 16:9 TV. Our calculator above assumes the standard 16:9 format.
Does my old wall mount fit the new larger TV? +
Yes, if the weight and VESA standard fit. This depends on two factors: The weight limit of the mount and the VESA standard. If your new 65-incher is lighter than the mount's limit and the VESA holes (e.g., 400x400) match, you can continue to use it.
How do you convert Curved TVs? +
The diagonal is measured along the curve. The inch specification also refers to the diagonal here (measured along the curve). The actual width on the wall (chord) is minimally less for Curved TVs than for flat devices of the same inch size because the device "curves". The difference is usually only 1-3 cm.
What does VESA mean? +
It is the standard for the mounting holes. VESA stands for "Video Electronics Standards Association". It is the international standard for the mounting holes on the back. A value of "VESA 400x200" means: The holes are 400mm horizontally and 200mm vertically apart.
Can I use any folding rule/tape measure? +
Yes, but be careful of scratches. Craftsman folding rules often have a certain tolerance and metal ends that can scratch the display. It is best to use a soft measuring tape from sewing supplies to avoid damaging the sensitive screen surface.
